Why We Exist

Many communities carry history. Few have modern symbols that speak to the next generation.

Matagi was created to build those symbols. Not as costume. Not as nostalgia. But as clothing that can live in the present and still carry the weight of where we come from.

Our foundation begins with the Moluccan diaspora in the Netherlands: a story of movement, displacement, resilience, family, pride and identity.

Foundation

Founded by Rezon Pattipeiluhu, Matagi comes from the experience of growing up between worlds: Dutch and Moluccan, western and rooted, modern and ancestral.

That in-between space is not a weakness. It is the point of view.

Every product starts from research, memory, culture and design. We study what symbols mean, then translate them into pieces that feel relevant now.

What We Build

We started with jerseys. A familiar silhouette, rebuilt as a cultural statement. Limited drops. Clear identity. Strong visual language.

From there, Matagi expands into coats, accessories, bags, eyewear, jewellery and future product categories. The goal is not to make random products. The goal is to build a world.

The Name

Matagi means wind in Samoan: movement, direction and unseen force.

It also refers to a Japanese hunting tradition shaped by discipline, precision and respect for nature.

Together, those meanings define our design language: movement with purpose, culture with discipline, identity without compromise.

The Future

Matagi is bigger than one product, one drop or one collection.

We are building a house for people who carry more than one culture. For diaspora kids, mixed families, creative outsiders and everyone who understands that identity is not fixed. It moves.

The first chapter starts with the Moluccan diaspora. The mission grows from there.
